Welcome to another Technique & Tip Tuesday!
For Today, We Are Talking About
Some Sticky Business!!!

That's Right, We're Going To Talk About Adhesives
And The Best Types For Various Projects.

Of Course, Now, These Are Just Tips From My Experience. You May Find That You
Like To Use Something Different In Some Of These Situations.
If You Have A Sticky Tip, I'd Love To Hear It, So
Please Share!

There Are So Many Different Types of Adhesives Out There! It Can Be Really Confusing
Trying To Figure Out Just What To Use On Each Project!
Hopefully, This Post Will Give You A Little Help With What Works
Best In Each Situation!

My Favorite Adhesive, By Far, For Many Projects Is The Tape Gun. If You Haven't Tried One, You Really Need To! They Are Absolutely Fabulous! The Initial Investment Is
A Bit Pricey, But Well Worth It In The Long Run! The Refill Rolls
Of Tape Are Very Reasonably Priced For The Amount Of Tape You Get,
And Comes In A Both Permanent And Removable Adhesives!
This Tape Is Really Sticky, Too! You Will Love It!
It Works Wonderfully To Put Cards And Layouts Together, As Well
As Putting Together Bags And Boxes! Defintely Consider A Tape Gun As Your
Go To Adhesive For Most Projects! I Have NEVER Had A Card
Or Layout Fall Apart, That I've Put
Together With My Tape Gun!

There Are Times, Of Course, When A Tape Gun Just Won't Quite Do It.
Especially When Adding Buttons, Pearls, Laces, Etc.

I've Found That Glue Dots Are Perfect For Adding Buttons To
Cards And Layouts. They're Very Sticky And Come In Several Sizes!
I Love The Mini Ones For Dew Drop Pearls, And The Small or Medium Are
Perfect For Buttons or Small Flowers! For Larger Embellishments,
The Large Glue Dots Work Great.

Then, There's The Cousin Of The Glue Dot... At Least That's What I Call Them,
Because They Are Very Similar To Glue Dots, But Are Lines or Strips Of
Glue, Made Of The Same Substance! These Wonderful
Little Things Are Called Zips! (I Think There's Some By A Different
Company, With A Different Name, But They're The Same Basic Thing).
They Are Awesome For Attaching Pieces Of Lace Or Ribbon!

Now, For Mini Pearls, Tiny Gems or Wiggly Eyes, That Come Without Adhesive On
The Back, Scotch Quick Dry Glue Works Beautifully! Simply Add
A Small Dot Of The Glue Where You Want Your
Pearl Or Gem, Place Your Pearl Or Gem On Top,
And Stick It Down! It Dries Very Quickly And Dries Clear.
So If You're Messy, Like Me, You Won't
Ruin Your Project!

When Adding Beads Or Clear Acrylic Pieces, I like To Use
Glossy Accents. Very Sticky And Holds Great! (This Stuff is Fantastic
For Making Your Own Decorative Stick Pins
With Beads!

For Altering Paint Cans, I Love The Red Liner Tape. (Also called
Terrifically Tacky Tape.) It Comes In A Roll, Is Extremely Sticky And
Has A Removable Red Liner On The Back. This Stuff
Sticks Great To Metal!

Lastly, Let's Talk About Attaching Your Images To Your Cards. Sometimes, I Do Use
The Tape Gun, But Most Of The Time, I Want My Image And Project
To Have Some Dimension. So, When I Want Dimension,
I Use Foam Mounting Tape. It's Thin Adhesive Foam And
Comes In A Roll. Just Snip Off How Much You
Need, Stick It On The Back Of Your Image, And Peel Off
The Protective Liner! Simple!
You Can Buy It Most Everywhere! In The Plumbing Department
At Walmart, Or Even Near The Scotch Tape In
Your Local Grocery Store!

Well, That's All Of The "Sticky Business" I Have For You,
Today! I Hope You Found It Helpful! I'd Love For Your To Share Your

Today is a very special day here at Shelly's Images. We are celebrating our 2nd Birthday!!! It doesn't seem possible, but two years ago today we opened Shelly's Images.com.

So much has happened in those two years. We have learned alot. We made lots of great friends, and continue to make changes here at the blog to try to always inspire you. We now offer some video tutorials which we hope entertain and teach you or remind you of a technique that you might not have used for awhile. And even the process of making our digi stamps has changed from the old fashioned pen and pencil with a lightbox to a very cool Wacom Cintiq.

TUTORIAL TUESDAY - an economical, foolproof way of "chalking"

Hi there! It's Jen here, from the Shelly's Images Design Team.

Today, on behalf of Shelly and my fellow Design Team members, I would like to show you a way of chalking, around your image, or on dry embossed cardstock in a really economical way.

Chalks are pretty expensive, and a good range of colours will cost a pretty packet. So I popped off to the bargain store and purchased a set of eye shadows, the powder type, in a selection of really bright, soft pastels, and some lovely metallic colours. It cost under ten dollar for a set of 48 fabulous colours!

This is the picture how-to:

Select your image, and for the purpose of this tutorial, I have used the very pretty image called "1st Birthday" available in the Shelly's Images Store HERE.

Really simple, isn't it! Now there is no need to throw out those eye shadows are are past their 'use-by' date. Transfer them from your vanity area to your craft area, and give them a new lease of life!

Have fun trying out this technique!

Hello Everyone and welcome to

Technique Tuesday here at Shelly's Images!

Today I don't really have a 'technique or tutorial' for you, but rather an interesting little piece of information that I thought you'd enjoy and could use.

While in the process of using the last sticker on a pack of K&Co. 'girly' stickers I discovered a HIDDEN TREASURE.

On the backing sheet of the package (seen here) ...

was this beautiful plaid pattern. Instantly I thought "WOW, that would make a great backing for my card!" so that's exactly what I did. I also used the plaid strip I had cut off the end ... added it to some solid pink cardstock and made this decorative panel.

Here's my finished project! WOW! Talk about a quick & easy creation ... and I didn't loose time trying to decide what paper to use that matched my focus image!

So ... my message to you today is:

Before you toss it in the trash,

look at it with an open mind and ask yourself ...

Can I use this in another way

other than what it was designed for?

Tutorial Tuesday - Tee Pee Card

If you are like me one of your resolutions for the New Year is to craft more often. Well here is your chance to get started with that resolution.

It's time for Tutorial Tuesday!

Today I am going to show you how to make a Tee Pee card. It will Wow all of your friends. It sure did mine. As my students would say it is "Easy Peasy, Lemon Squeezy!"

Supplies needed: 3 squares of card stock for base (your choice of color and size), 3 squares of designer paper 1/2 inch smaller in size, adhesive, bone folder, closure (such as ribbon or velcro), image of choice and embellishments as desired

Step 1: Cut three squares of same size and color of card stock for base of card. I chose 5 x 5 for my square. You many use any size square. The bigger the square the bigger the card.

Step 2: Fold each square on the diagonal and crease with bone folder.

Step 3: Assemble 3 folded squares with adhesive.

Step 4: Add a closure such as velcro or use ribbon. I found that velcro is the easiest to work with for this card.

Step 5: Cut your designer paper squares in half on the diagonal and adhere to 3 sides. Do not adhere one to the side with the closure. You may add as many layers of paper as you would like.

Step 6: Use the three remaining pieces of designer paper to add to the 3 ends that were not covered.

Step 7: Add desired image and embellishments to complete your card.

What a stunning group of snowy projects everyone entered during our 2 week challenge. Thanks again to everyone who joined us for our 12 Days of Christmas event.

I had such fun reading the posts and emails from everyone. We got so many nice notes from all of our Shelly's Images friends. I always hate to see anything come to an end so the end of our 12 Days of Christmas leaves me feeling kind of sad.

But.....the great news is that we get to announce the winners from the games that we played. I will give a rundown of each day with a link.

our DT sisters gave to us.....

Christmas SOCKS!!!!!!

This 12 Days of Christmas event is now closed.

And we had so much fun with our DT sock swap that we thought we would share our fun with everyone for our 12th Day of Christmas.

The idea was originally brought to the team from Sammi. And the whole team jumped at the idea to send a fun Christmas package to our other DT sisters. So Sammi drew names and the shopping began. Of course we have been planning this since November because many of our DT sisters are in such different areas of the world. We knew it would take longer for Santa to make that early trip for this special delivery.

As it turns out Santa ran into a terrible blizzard over the ocean so a few of our DT sisters haven't gotten their packages yet. Even Rudolph couldn't guide Santa through this storm! But never fear. When the packages arrive we will do another fun post to show all of our socks.

These are Shelly's super cute Snowman socks!

Stephanie took a picture of one pair on each foot (I should have thought of that!) Very stylish!

These are the socks that Pandy's Santa delivered. Such festive red and green.

Poor Darlene's little tootsies are freezing. Santa hasn't visited her house yet. She has been stalking the mailman for days though.

Here are Heather's cute socks. I wonder if these are home made?

These are Min's wonderful Christmas socks. Looks like Min is all relaxed with a tin of cookies.

We still haven't shared who are secret Santa's are. But I know we will have such fun chatting and skyping about all the fun stuff we got in our Christmas packages.

Shelly's Images gave to me.....a super easy tutorial to make a simple tag holder card!

(Please remember that our challenge that began last Thursday is a two week challenge.)

Please enjoy this freebie tutorial and send all of your friends in right away to enjoy a special gift from us.

How often have you received a card containing a gift card in the folder and envelope from the store?
How often have you received an envelope containing only money with the greeting hurriedly scribbled on the outside?
I have created a card that will remain a treasured keepsake, undamaged, once the gift card or money is removed. There is a separate tag with a little envelope behind the card, which also serves to hold the card closed.

Here is how it's done:

A SIMPLE TAG HOLDER CARD

Use double sided cardstock and cut a sheet (landscape orientation) 7½ inches by 10 inches
The horizontal fold is a mountain fold 5 inches from the top
The vertical folds are valley folds 2½ inches in from the left hand edge and 2½ inches from the right hand edge
Cut off the triangle from the bottom left and bottom right hand corners.
Fold it into the card shape and it should look like this:

Decorate the inside and outside of your card.

Create a tag and paste a small envelope to the back in which you can put your gift card, atc or a folded bank note or two

Place the tag in the front of the card to finish off your fabulous creation!

That wasn't too difficult, was it?

We are having SO much fun with our 12 Days of Christmas event. I am getting lots of emails today from friends that have opened the presents under our Shelly's Images Christmas tree.

This is a little reminder post with all of our 12 Day activities. Be sure you haven't missed out on any of the fun.

My True Love Gave to me......

Two new Cookie Sheets so I can make a Million Christmas Cookies....... =)

Well, actually it was my mom that gave me the two new cookie sheets!

If your family is anything like our family - Christmas is the time that the Baking Sheets and Chocolate melting pots come out and there are sweets galore being made in our house!

Every year, 2 weeks before Christmas I host a Cookie Exchange Brunch with family and friends and we swap swap swap Christmas Cookies and; happily we go on our way.

So today, I'd LOVE to share with you one of my favorite cookie recipes and in turn, since we can't all swap cookies, I'd love for us to be able to swap cookie RECIPES! =)

Here goes - this is one of my favorites - simple and YUMMY!

Spritzer Christmas Cookies

2 cups butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

Directions - In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine flour and baking powder; add to creamed mixture and mix well.

Get out your handy dandy cookie press - fitted with the disk of your choice, press dough 2 in. apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 325* for 11/12 minutes or until set (do not brown). Remove to wire racks. Yield: 11-12 dozen.

I usually split up the batches and flavor them differently - For the Stars I switch out the Vanilla Extract and use Lemon. For the Christmas Trees, I replace the Vanilla with Peppermint and a few drops of green food coloring. Red Food Coloring for the Candy Canes. You can mix and match till your little heart is content.

I love the simplicity and flexibility of these yummy cookies!

On the 4th Day of Christmas

Today we are showing you how to make a cute container for the Letters to Santa that the children write each year. What a great way to keep and preserve these fun letters. And imagine how fun it will be to open these 5 or 10 years from now.

We have a number of files that go with this tutorial to give to you.

The first file is the template used to cut out the pieces for the top and bottom of your container. Just insert the image into a Word document as you would any other digi stamp that you use. It should insert at the correct size for printing. Print it on the wrong side of your patterned paper and cut out. Be sure to print and cut two.

The second file is the file used for the letters to put in the container. Follow the link to get the Word document for printing. I forgot to mention it in the video, but these will print on a 5 3/4 x 9 inch piece of paper.

And lastly we are offering the Flourish .svg file used to cut the flourishes used on our project. This file actually contains two versions of flourishes. It can be used with Make the Cut software or any other software that allows you to import .svg files for cutting. (We would love to hear how many of our Shelly's Images friends are using .svg files. Please leave us a little note if you would be interested in more .svg files in the future.)

Shelly and the DT gave us a 2 week challenge!

That's right....since we have so much fun planned for the next 12 days here at the blog we thought that we would do a 2 week challenge. So you have from today through December 14th to enter as many times as you like. We will choose our normal Gold, Silver, and Bronze Award winners, but we will also choose one random winner for every 25 entries. So enter often and send all of your friends in to enter too.

What is the challenge you might ask? Our two week challenge is called "There's no business like SNOW business". Enter any project that has something to do with snow. Once you have entered a "snow" project feel free to enter as many additional "anything goes" projects as you like. But to be eligible for the awards you must have at least one snow project entered.

The Design Team and I have made projects using our "Snow Lady" set. This is a fantastic set with lots of extra pieces for paper piecing and designing as well as a wonderful sentiment. Don't forget that you can get this image at a special sale price today.

Tutorial Tuesday - Altered Tablets

It's time once again for Tutorial Tuesday

here at Shelly's Images!

And, I (Darlene) am thrilled to be your hostess!

Here's an EASY creation that can be made to fit ANY occasion and is not only a wonderful gift giving idea, but a GREAT selling craft show item! Let's get started . . .

Here's the finished product ... Closed.

Here are the basic products you will need ...

1 - 80# or more 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock
1 - 12x12 designer paper of your theme choice
1 - 5 x 8 lined tablet (I bought mine at a wholesale club similar to Sam's Club - 24 tables for $6.00)
Adhesive of your choice ... I used 1/4" and 1/8" ScoreTape
Embellishments of your choice (my image is Shelly's 'PINE' digi)

Cut your BASE CARDSTOCK to 8 1/8" x 10 1/2" ... SCORE at 5 1/8" and again at 5 3/8" ... this will make your cover. Then put your adhesive onto the back of you tablet and carefully line it up and attach it the 'back side' of your cover.

From your designer paper, you will need a panel for the FRONT, a 5" piece for the inside pocket, a 1" x 5" piece for the top of the tablet and in my case ... a narrow strip 8" x 1/2" to FIX A BOO BOO ...
I didn't get my tablet on exactly right and could see it when I closed the front lid ... so I cut a piece of the dp and attached it to the INSIDE of the cover before to remedy the problem (doesn't it figure I'd do this when I was taking photos for a tutorial! Uuugh!)

You can adorn your pocket flap how ever you choose! I add a single 'Just A Note' sheet just to let the person know that there is a USABLE pocket available. It can certainly be used for store coupons, receipts, a few envelopes perhaps ... or whatever!

Be sure to measure the top of your tablet before cutting the decorative strip ... not all tablets are the same. And it found it holds better if you SCORE it before adding adhesive and attaching it to the tablet top. This is not a necessary step ... but one that I think finishes it off nicely!

Here is the finished OPEN view of the Altered Tablet.

You can certainly ALTER this tutorial to fit your needs and the possibilities are ENDLESS! Tutorial Tuesday

It's time for Tutorial Tuesday!

Today I am going to show you how to alter clear bulbs into a huge hit for the holidays.

Supplies needed: clear glass bulbs (your choice of size and shape), fine glitter (color of your choice), Pledge Floor Wax, embellishments, hooks/ribbon/string to hang bulb, sentiment of choice

Step 1: Use a surface that is easy to clean when making these bulbs. Pour floor wax into bulb. Swish around until inside is coated. Pour excess into a cup or back into the bottle.

Step 2: Pour fine glitter into bulb. Swish glitter around inside the bulb until coated completely. You may need to add more glitter. Pour excess glitter out.

Step 3: Add string or hook to bulb for hanging.

Step 4: Add sentiment of choice. I chose Shelly's Images Happy Holiday sentiment. I used two so that if the bulb spins that the sentiment is visible on both sides.

My studio friends...

Well, it is true that I spend ALOT of time in my studio. If I am not drawing an image for the shop, or an image for our Fabulous Freebie Friday events, then I am likely working on blog posts or the store. And every now and then I get time to create a project too.

This week I have a couple of new additions to my studio. My son had a fish tank in his room that he was tired of. So I brought it up to my studio and put two really cute fancy goldfish in it along with two snails.

My other new studio item is a video camera. I have been wanting to do some video tutorials for so long. And now I finally can. Although I will tell you that the whole idea makes me nervous.

So this morning I thought I would share a little picture with you of a few of my studio friends. Our kitty Claire is almost always in here with me. And generally she is right in the middle of whatever I am trying to work on.

It's a Monochromatic Challenge, PLUS we're asking you to add ribbon to your project too. This means you could pick Red and do your project in all shades of red, or any other color for that matter.

HOWEVER, we're going to throw a little twist into the challenge - IF and only IF you wish - you can add a POP of color, that's not part of the monochromatic scheme.

We tried the weekly deals and that seemed to take alot of time to put the deals at the store and post about them here at the blog. Hopefully the monthly deals will be easier.

Technique Tuesday - Custom Ribbon!

I don't know about you, but I LOVE RIBBON (and buttons and bling and and and.....LOL)

I'm always looking for something uniquely different that I can do with ribbon I have in my stash and today I'm going to show you how to PERFECTLY MATCH your ribbon with your projects.

How to do that you may ask?

Well, grab your favorite ribbon and an Alcohol Marker of your choice (use copics), a piece of thick scrap paper (I used kraft, but anything with some substance to it will work) to keep your table clean and let's get started.

Determine how much ribbon you'll need and start coloring - I used the broad end of the marker to color. Be sure to color on the scrap paper because the ink WILL LEAK THROUGH!

Color the amount of ribbon you need - as it dries, it will become uniform in color.

Once it's dry, use it on your project and get creatin'!

Just a quick note - your ribbon will likely become a little stiffer after you color it - just be patient & work with it--you won't be sorry!

So far I've tried it on this heavier ribbon, as well as the whispy see through ribbon (can't for the life of me think what it's called). So, now I have a variety of white ribbon in my stash that I can color up at a moments notice and is perfect for ANY project I do! =)
